Department of Orthodontics
Our department is one of the basic educational institutions of our country in the field of orthodontics, and has always been at the forefront in the treatment of orthodontic problems doing postgradute orthodontics education since 1973. Orthodontics education had been a 4 year PhD programme until 2011, and after 2012, specialty training programmes has been defined in the field of dentistry and graduates who pass Dentistry Specialty Education Entrance Examination (DUS) are accepted to the program. The graduates who have completed their postgraduate education in our Department continue their studies as academicians, have pioneered the establishment of new Orthodontic Departments in our country or carry out important duties. In Hacettepe University, Faculty of Dentistry Department of Orthodontics, patients of all ages with tooth-jaw discrepancies and crowded teeth are treated by using removable or fixed appliances, as well as skeletal disorders are corrected by growth guidance or surgical treatments. The treatments applied in our clinics are; removable, functional and fixed appliance treatments, early orthodontic treatments, extraoral appliance applications, adult orthodontics treatment, lingual orthodontics and clear aligner treatments, cleft lip and palate, sleep apnea, temporomandibular joint and orthognathic surgery treatments, trauma splint and retention applications.
Dentistry education: Dentistry students receive 28 hours of theoretical orthodontics training in the 3rd and 4th years, following a 1-hour orthodontic introductory course in the 1st year. In the 4th and 5th years, they receive 44 and 60 hours of diagnosis and treatment planning, case discussion and clinical practice training in small groups, respectively.
Specialty training: Specialty training in orthodontics is a 4 year program. Within the framework of the program, 1 month oral and maxillofacial surgery and 1 month periodontology rotations are performed. Orthodontics practice training is clinically started with removable appliances, continues with the addition of fixed orthodontic treatment applications at the end of 3 months. In the 1st and 2nd years of education, a proficiency exam is applied for seniority, and at the end of the 4th year, a specialty thesis is presented by the student and if the thesis is accepted by the jury a final exam is applied.

- Article review hour 1 day a week (Monday from 9:00 am to 9:45 am)
- Case discussion meeting 1 day a week (Tuesday 9:00 am- 12:00 pm)
- Seminar every 15 days (Tuesday 11.00 am- 12.00 pm)
Specialty training sudents can apply all kind of orthodontic treatments applied in our department and carry out every stage of the treatment under the supervision of the responsible faculty member. During their education, they also learn by taking part in training of the dentistry students.
